Neutering

wo kittens in a basketThere are thousands of unwanted felines in the UK, please don't add to that number! Be a responsible owner and have your cat neutered (both males and females) between four and six months of age.

Neutering, castration for male cats and spaying for females, is a routine operation, costing between £20 and £50. It has numerous benefits for your cat.

Neutered male cats

  • will become less likely to roam (reducing the risk of being run over),
  • will become less likely to fight, thus improving their chances of avoiding serious diseases, like feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) which are transmitted by cat bites and reproductive activity.
  • will also be less likely to mark their territory with urine (spraying).

Spayed female cats

  • can avoid unwanted pregnancies (It is NOT beneficial for a female cat to have a litter before spaying, this is a myth),
  • won't call and wail during their sexual cycle
  • will be less likely to contract diseases spread by bites and reproductive activity.

Cats recover very quickly from neutering operations but we'd recommend following your vet's advice on how to look after your cat after its operation.

Neutering Scheme

Cats Protection may be able to help with the cost of neutering your cat. You can qualify for support if you are one of the following:

  • A full-time student.
  • On a pension.
  • On a means-tested benefit.
  • On a low wage.

If your application is successful, you will be sent a voucher which must be given to your veterinary surgeon when your cat goes for its operation.

Please note the current value of the vouchers are £20 for female cats and £15 for male cats - you will need to pay the remaining amount for the cost of the operation directly to the veterinary surgeon.

Why buy kittens from a newspaper?

Why pay £50-£100 for a kitten from adverts in the paper - Look what we offer as standard:

All of the above would normally cost well over £100! Couple that with the fact that you will be helping cats who are desperately in need of homes and everybody wins!

All we ask for is a reasonable donation - most people find between £50 and £75 is acceptable. So not only does your money benefit the cats in our care, you end up with far more than a newspaper trader could offer!
